Brief History

The first expedition to Orissa began on 15th January 1963 from Nagpur. The group consisted of six sisters led by Sister Mary Ann (Superior) Catherine Lobo, Geralyn Ann and Thecla who were met by SVD Father Regional, at Jharsuguda. The sisters stayed in Jharsuguda for a week and experienced the warmth and hospitality of fathers and sisters of “Hant maids of Mary”. On 22nd January sisters were brought by jeep to Sambalpur. Mr. Banmali Babu and other two government officials took them to the actual site where the present school stands in Brook’s Hill. On 25th January the Bishop of Sambalpur paid them a visit and welcomed them into his diocese. The very next day they started with admissions. In 1963, 11th February officially the St. Joseph convent was inaugurated on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Mr. Banmali Babu the then MLA, took great interest and pain in the establishment of the Institution and supported, and cared for the sisters till his death on 5th August 1998. The mission of the sisters was to impart sound education through formation of character and the all round development of the students, spiritual, physical, academic and cultural. The school progressed steadily. Later on adding Odia medium section class I to V free of cost along with coaching classes for the weaker students.

The SJC had its humble beginning in 1964 and it has already celebrated its golden jubilee. Today more than 3300 students are studying here following the ICSE curriculum. The ISC wing started in 2006. An outstanding change has taken place recently in physical structure and in all other areas. The contemporary society undergoes various changes in all aspects of life. So also the face of SJC has a new look, new vigour, new opportunities & new facilities in academic & co-curricular activities.
